Google asks for a phone number when it wants a second signal that a new account, or a surprising sign-in, comes from a person. The check makes bulk sign-ups harder. If none of that works, the step is required for this attempt. That is the moment for a virtual number rather than your own. Once a personal number is on the account, it tends to stay, and it is one of the easiest ways to tie separate accounts to one person.

If you already know Google will want another code soon, a rental fits better. It stays on your account for 7, 14 or 30 days, from about $4 for a week, and receives every SMS sent to it. A physical SIM is the most widely accepted type. Nothing renews on its own, so extend it before the end date if you still need the line. The trade-off is in renting versus a one-time number.

One last case. Google has been moving some checks off SMS, and some flows now ask you to scan a QR code or to send a text from your own phone.
