Right after the check, Google may offer to use the number across its services. Choose Skip. The line was only there for one code. A physical SIM is the most widely accepted type. Nothing renews on its own, so extend it before the end date if you still need the line. The trade-off is in renting versus a one-time number.

One last case. Google has been moving some checks off SMS, and some flows now ask you to scan a QR code or to send a text from your own phone.
