Google asks for a phone number when it wants a second signal that a new account, or a surprising sign-in, comes from a person. The check makes bulk sign-ups harder. It also leaves your personal number stored on one more account. A virtual mobile number can take the single text, so your own line stays out of it. 6. Copy the code. It shows on the order a few seconds after Google sends it, already pulled out of the text. Google’s messages often look like G-123456. If the form already prints the “G-”, type only the digits.

Nothing after two minutes? Cancel and pick another network. The hold is released, so a failed attempt costs nothing.

If you already know Google will want another code soon, a rental fits better. It stays on your account for 7, 14 or 30 days, from about $4 for a week, and receives every SMS sent to it. A physical SIM is the most widely accepted type. Nothing renews on its own, so extend it before the end date if you still need the line. The trade-off is in renting versus a one-time number.

One last case. Google has been moving some checks off SMS, and some flows now ask you to scan a QR code or to send a text from your own phone.
