Google asks for a phone number when it wants a second signal that a new account, or a surprising sign-in, comes from a person. The check makes bulk sign-ups harder. It also leaves your personal number stored on one more account. A virtual mobile number can take the single text, so your own line stays out of it. If the whole idea is new, start with receiving SMS online without a SIM.
Tô Google a hûnda nûmerô tî téléfone
Google decides attempt by attempt. The same form can demand a number from one person and offer Skip to the next, because it appears to weigh the device, the browser, the connection, and how many accounts were just created nearby. In our experience the prompt shows up in three places:
- A new account, especially from a desktop browser, a shared network, a VPN, or a connection that just created other accounts.
- A sign-in Google finds unusual, such as a new device or a new country. That is the “Verify it’s you” screen.
- A specific product, such as some YouTube creator tools or a developer account, even when sign-up itself never asked.
The code is normally six digits by text. If Google offers a call as well, choose the text. Virtual numbers receive SMS only.
Mo lîngbi tî sâra kônti tî Gmail na nûmerô tî téléfone âpe?
Often, yes, at least right now. Google does not publish the rule, but the same patterns keep showing up:
- Look for Skip. When the step is optional, the button is on the screen. If you see it, you do not need a number.
- Sign up from a phone. The Gmail app, or adding an account on Android, leaves the step optional more often than a desktop browser does.
- Sign up from home. A home connection, no VPN, and a browser that is not already juggling other Google accounts usually draws fewer checks.
- Use an email you already have. Google can open an account on an existing address. You confirm that inbox, and the phone step may never appear.
If none of that works, the step is required for this attempt. That is the moment for a virtual number rather than your own. Once a personal number is on the account, it tends to stay, and it is one of the easiest ways to tie separate accounts to one person.

- Reach the phone step first. Fill Google’s form until it asks. The number waits 20 minutes, and that time should be spent on the code, not on your name and password.
- Open the Google numbers page and pick a country that matches your connection. More on that below.
- Read the networks. Each one shows a live price, how many numbers are free, and a delivery rate as signal bars. The strongest sensible option is already selected.
- Reserve the number. The price is held on your balance and charged only if the SMS arrives.
- Enter it in Google’s form. Select the same country in Google’s list, then paste the rest of the number. A doubled country code, or a leftover leading zero, is a common “invalid number” error.
- Copy the code. It shows on the order a few seconds after Google sends it, already pulled out of the text. Google’s messages often look like G-123456. If the form already prints the “G-”, type only the digits.
Nothing after two minutes? Cancel and pick another network. The hold is released, so a failed attempt costs nothing.
Right after the check, Google may offer to use the number across its services. Choose Skip. The line was only there for one code. These numbers are for accounts you will actually use, not for bulk sign-ups or for getting around a suspension. The limits are in the ndia tî kua sô a yê.

- Match the location. Pick a number from the country your IP points to. If you use a VPN, turn it off for sign-up, or pick a number from the VPN’s exit country.
- Keep the language ordinary. A French number with a browser in French or English looks normal. The same number with a language rarely used in France, and a time zone on another continent, stands out.
- Change networks before countries. If one attempt fails, try another network in the same country first. Hopping through several countries on one sign-up looks like trial and error, because it is.
Numbers are stocked across 145 countries, so you can usually stay consistent with where you actually are.
Na pekô tî sûnga: sâra kônti sô a yeke kângbi na nûmerô âpe
A one-time number receives one code from the app you picked. After the 20-minute window it is no longer reserved, and one day it may be given to someone else. Google, meanwhile, often keeps the number as the recovery phone. Spend five minutes cutting that dependency:
- Add a recovery email you control. That is how Google reaches you if a later sign-in is challenged.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification with an authenticator app, or add a passkey. Both prove it is you without SMS. Store the backup codes somewhere you can open.
- Remove or replace the recovery phone. In the Security section of the Google Account, drop the one-time number or swap in a line you will keep. A number you no longer control should not be a way back in.
If you already know Google will want another code soon, a rental fits better. It stays on your account for 7, 14 or 30 days, from about $4 for a week, and receives every SMS sent to it. A physical SIM is the most widely accepted type. Nothing renews on its own, so extend it before the end date if you still need the line. The trade-off is in renting versus a one-time number.
Tô Google a tene nûmerô a lîngbi tî sâra âpe
The number most likely to pass is a mobile one. Google, like many apps, tends to refuse VoIP outright. That is why these lines sit on carrier networks. Non-VoIP versus VoIP explains the difference. Even a mobile number can be refused. Because you are charged only when an SMS arrives, a refusal costs time, not money.
| What you see | What it usually means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| “This phone number cannot be used for verification” | Google distrusts the number or the attempt: its type, its history, or a country mismatch | Switch to a four-bar network. If it keeps happening, recheck the country |
| “This phone number has been used too many times” | The number is already tied to other Google accounts | Take a fresh number from another network. Do not retry the same one |
| “Try again later” | Too many attempts from the device or the connection | Stop for a few hours. More attempts tend to extend the wait |
| No error, and no code | The SMS is delayed or filtered on that route | Wait two minutes, cancel, and try another network |
The delivery bars are the practical guide: the share of recent orders on that network where the code actually arrived. Four bars is a proven route. One bar still works, less often. For everything else about a missing text, see why an SMS code does not arrive.
One last case. Google has been moving some checks off SMS, and some flows now ask you to scan a QR code or to send a text from your own phone. A virtual number can only receive, so it cannot finish that path. Go back and try again later, or from another device. The check Google shows often changes between attempts.
Next step: open the Google numbers page, see which networks have four bars in your country, and have Google’s phone step on screen before you reserve a number.
