Telegram will not open an account until it has a number to text. It does not have to be your personal number. A virtual line receives the code the same way, keeps your real number out of the app, and, set up properly, leaves you with an account that is actually yours.

The part most people skip is what happens after sign-up, because the number stays attached. This guide covers both halves: getting the code, and keeping the account once the number is no longer in your hands.

What other people see is your choice. Under Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number you decide who can see the number and, depending on that choice, who can find you by it. With a virtual number, the natural setup is to hide it and share a username instead.

Sitepu ki he sitepu: fakapapauʻi ʻa e Telegram ʻaki ha fika virtual

  1. Open Telegram first. Install the app and reach the phone screen. New accounts are easiest to create in the mobile app. None of the 20-minute window should be spent on setup.
  2. Pick a country on the Telegram numbers page. Every network shows its live price, free numbers and delivery rate. The best one is pre-selected. The price is held, not charged yet.
  3. Paste the number. Select the country code shown with the order, then paste the rest. Check the digits. A typo sends the code to someone else and can still count against Telegram’s attempt limits.
  4. Request the SMS. The order page updates on its own. The code appears seconds after Telegram sends it, already extracted, with a copy button.
  5. Enter it and add your name. Only now is the held amount charged. If no SMS arrives within 20 minutes, the hold is released. After 2 minutes you can cancel and try another network.

Depending on the device and the region, Telegram may also ask for a login email during sign-up. Use an address you control. Telegram may send later login codes there instead of by SMS, which is one more way back in.

Fili ha fonua mo ha netiueka

Telegram is one of the pricier apps to verify. A code often costs $0.50 to $2, depending on the country and network. You always see the exact price before you reserve anything.

The four bars next to each network are the share of recent orders where the code arrived. Four bars means texts land most of the time. One bar means the route works, less reliably. That leaves a real choice:

  • Cheaper, fewer bars. If the code does not arrive you pay nothing, so a failure costs only time.
  • Pricier, more bars. Fewer failed attempts. With Telegram this matters more than usual, because several failures in a row can trigger a “too many attempts” wait.

We would lean toward the better-rated network, even if it costs a little more. The country matters less than the network. In our experience Telegram accepts numbers from many countries, so the best-rated offer is usually the right one. If a country shows no Telegram numbers right now, check back. Stock moves every few minutes.

If you do only one thing, set a cloud password. It is the setting that keeps the account yours after the number is gone.

A one-time number is not yours for long, and even a rental eventually returns to the pool. If that number is later issued to someone who tries to sign in to Telegram with it, these settings are what keep them out. Menu names vary slightly between Android, iPhone and desktop.

  • Turn on two-step verification. Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification. Set a cloud password and add a recovery email you control. A new sign-in then needs the password as well as the code.
  • Hide the number. Privacy and Security → Phone Number. Set who can see it to Nobody or My Contacts, and where Telegram offers it, limit who can find you by the number to My Contacts.
  • Set a username. People can then reach you by @name without ever seeing a number.
  • Review devices. Settings → Devices. End any session you do not recognize, and keep at least one signed in. The next section explains why.

ʻI he taimi ʻoku toe kole ai ʻe Telegram ʻa e kouti

Telegram asks for a new code when you sign in on a new phone or computer, reinstall the app, or come back after logging out everywhere. Where that code goes depends on what you still have:

  • A signed-in device. Telegram usually sends the code inside the app, as a message from its official account, rather than by SMS. As long as one device stays signed in, you usually do not need the number at all.
  • A login email. If you set one, Telegram may send the code there.
  • Neither. Telegram texts the number. A one-time number is long gone by then.

That last case is why a rental makes sense for an account you plan to keep. It stays yours for 7, 14 or 30 days, receives every SMS sent to it, and can be extended before the end date. Rented and one-time numbers walks through the trade-off. If you later want the account on a different number, Telegram lets you change it from settings, with a code sent to the new number.

Ko e palopalema

Telegram says it sent the code to your other device. The number already has an account with an active session. That is rare on a fresh number. Cancel after 2 minutes (you are not charged) and take a number from another network. If it is your own account and you are signing in on a new device, open Telegram where you are still signed in and look for the message from Telegram.

“Too many attempts.” Telegram has paused code requests, sometimes for minutes and sometimes for many hours. Retrying usually does not shorten it. Let it run out, then try a better-rated network.

No SMS after a couple of minutes. Check the country code and the digits. Then cancel and try another network or country. A code that never came costs nothing. Ignore any offer of a call. These numbers receive SMS only.

Telegram says the number is banned. That particular number will not be accepted. Cancel and pick another network. If your own account was banned, a new number is not the answer. The lines are for privacy and ordinary use, not for evading bans. See the tuʻutuʻuni ki hono fakaʻaongaʻi ʻo.

For a fuller checklist, see what to do when an SMS code does not arrive.

Next step: open Telegram’s phone screen, then pick a country on the Telegram numbers page. You see each network’s price and delivery rate before you pay.
