WhatsApp Virtual Number: How to Use WhatsApp Without a SIM
WhatsApp needs a number that can receive one text. It does not have to be the SIM in your phone. The harder part is keeping the account after a reinstall, when WhatsApp asks for that same number again.

On this page
WhatsApp needs a number that can receive its verification text. That number does not have to be the SIM in your phone, or any SIM you own. The code arrives online, which is how WhatsApp runs on a phone with no SIM, on a second phone, or simply without your personal number in the account.
It works. WhatsApp is also stricter than most apps about which numbers it accepts, how often you may ask, and when it will ask again. Knowing that before you start saves the account as well as the attempt.
What to expect before you start
- The number is the account. WhatsApp identifies you by it, and the people you message can usually see it.
- It verifies again. A reinstall, a new phone, and the occasional security check all text the same number. If you no longer have it, you can lose the account.
- SMS only. These numbers cannot take the voice call WhatsApp sometimes offers instead.
- It is picky. In our experience WhatsApp is one of the stricter apps about number ranges, and it limits how often a code can be requested.
For an account you will keep, a rental is usually the better choice. It stays yours for 7, 14 or 30 days and receives every later WhatsApp text, including the one after a reinstall. A one-time number suits a short-lived account you will not verify again.
Step by step: verify WhatsApp with a virtual number
- Stop on WhatsApp’s phone screen. Install the app, accept the terms, and wait on the number field. The 20-minute window starts when you reserve the line, so get here first.
- Get a number on the WhatsApp numbers page. Each network shows its price, free stock and delivery rate, and the best one is pre-selected. The price is held, not charged. If you are keeping the account, rent instead.
- Match the country code and paste the rest. Confirm when WhatsApp asks whether the number is right. A typo wastes an attempt and can start a timer.
- Choose SMS, not a call. WhatsApp may offer a text, a voice call, and on some Android phones a missed call it reads from the call log. Only the text can reach a virtual number. If you only see a call, look for another way to verify, or wait until SMS is offered.
- Copy the six-digit code. It appears on the order seconds after WhatsApp sends it. The held amount is charged only now. If no SMS comes within 20 minutes, the hold is released. After 2 minutes you can cancel and try another network.
Protect the account: PIN and backups
Do this before you start chatting. Menu names shift a little between versions.
Two-step PIN. Settings → Account → Two-step verification. Turn it on, pick a six-digit PIN, and add an email so you can reset the PIN if you forget it. Registering the number on a phone then needs the PIN as well as the SMS. That matters: if the number later returns to the pool and someone else tries to register WhatsApp on it, the PIN is what stops them.
Backups. Settings → Chats → Chat backup, to Google Drive on Android or iCloud on iPhone. End-to-end encryption of the backup is optional and worth turning on. The catch: restoring on a new phone still starts by verifying the same number. The backup keeps the chats. Only the number gets you back to them.
Email and linked devices. Newer versions let you add an email under Settings → Account. WhatsApp may offer it as another place for a login code. Add it, and do not count on it replacing the number. WhatsApp Web and the desktop app link by a QR code from the phone, so they do not need another SMS.
Moving to a new phone later
This is where a rental pays for itself.
- Back up on the old phone, and make sure you know the two-step PIN.
- Check the rental’s end date. If it is close, extend it first. The new days are added to the current end date.
- Install WhatsApp on the new phone and enter the same number. The code lands in the rental inbox like any other SMS.
- Enter the code and the PIN, then restore the backup when WhatsApp offers it.
With a one-time number there is no step 3. The line is no longer yours, so the account lasts only as long as its current installation.
Choosing a country and network
The WhatsApp page lists countries in stock, each with a price, free numbers and a delivery rate. The four bars are the share of recent orders where the code actually arrived.
- Favor the bars over the price. A failed code costs nothing, but every extra attempt can lengthen the wait before WhatsApp lets you ask again.
- Pick a country you are willing to show. WhatsApp generally does not require the number to match where you live, but the people you message will usually see the country code.
- Start from the country if you already have one in mind. A page such as United Kingdom numbers shows what is in stock and lets you order from there.
- For a rental, prefer a physical SIM or a premium line. They are the most widely accepted types, which matters more when you pay for the whole term up front.
Common problems and fixes
A timer before the next code. After each request WhatsApp may make you wait, and the wait grows with every attempt, from a minute or two to several hours. Wrong codes can lock you out for a while too. Do not keep tapping resend. Wait the timer out. If the SMS still has not come, cancel (you are not charged) and try another network once WhatsApp allows it.
The number is banned or not allowed. WhatsApp has refused that number or its range. Cancel after 2 minutes and choose another network or country, ideally one with more bars. If WhatsApp banned your own account, a new number is not the fix. Use the review request inside the app.
The code does not arrive. Check that the country code and the digits match the order, and that you chose SMS rather than a call. Give it a couple of minutes, then cancel and switch networks. SMS codes that do not arrive covers the less common causes.
Use it responsibly
WhatsApp bans accounts that send bulk or automated messages, contact lots of people who do not have the number saved, or get reported as spam. New accounts are watched more closely. We do not allow that use either. The numbers are for privacy and ordinary messaging, not for spam, scams, or getting around a ban. The acceptable use policy has the list. Message people who expect to hear from you, and let contacts and groups grow the way a person’s would.
Next step: pick a country on the WhatsApp numbers page. If you are keeping the account, rent the number, so every later code still reaches you.
Questions
Can I use WhatsApp without a SIM card?
Yes. WhatsApp only needs a number that can receive its text. A phone with no SIM, a second phone, or a desktop session linked by QR can all use that registration.
How much does a WhatsApp virtual number cost?
A one-time code is priced per network on the WhatsApp page, and you pay only if the SMS arrives. A rental, from about $4 for 7 days, is the better fit when you will need the number again.
Can I get the WhatsApp code by voice call?
No. These numbers receive SMS only. If WhatsApp offers a call or a missed call, wait for the text option or look for another way to verify.
Will I lose my WhatsApp account when the number expires?
A one-time number is gone after its code window, so a later reinstall cannot be verified. A rental stays yours for 7, 14 or 30 days. The two-step PIN and a chat backup are what keep the account recoverable.
Why does WhatsApp make me wait before sending another code?
Each request can start a longer cooldown, and wrong codes make it worse. Wait the timer out, then try another network once. Hammering resend usually extends the wait.
