You can use one in two ways:

• One-time number, also called an activation. Reserved for one code from one app. Finished once the code arrives.
• Rented number. Reserved for your account for days or weeks, receiving every SMS sent to it, so you can log back in or verify again later.

Both are receive-only. You cannot send texts or take calls from them. “Virtual” describes how you read the messages, not the kind of line behind them.
